Localization is one of the largest costs of doing business in the global marketplace, and yet, it is a black box for many companies. Selecting the right localization vendor is about building relationships, integrating processes, and working together as a team. Price cannot and should not be your only, or even your primary, criterion. Instead, you are building a long-term relationship that, if done correctly, will enable you to more effectively meet your business goals. You will learn the following:

  • Basic localization process
  • Tips and tricks for communicating with the vendor
  • Things to look for in a vendor relationship


Presenter

Katherine (Kit) Brown-Hoekstra is an award-winning writer and consultant with a background in the life sciences and 23+ years of experience in the technical communication field. She is currently the Principal for Comgenesis, LLC, which provides consulting services and training to clients on internationalizing and improving the usability of their documentation, developing a coherent content strategy and content model, as well as more traditional technical writing and editing services. Kit is also a Fellow for the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and 2014-15 Society President.

During her career, Kit has worked with technical experts worldwide to successfully develop information and training materials for a variety of global audiences, ranging from government agencies to technicians, physicians, and software end-users. Kit holds a Master of Science degree in Technical Communication and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, both from Colorado State University.

She speaks at many conferences worldwide. Currently, she presents a webinar series called Global-Ready Content for the Localization Institute. In 2007, she coauthored (with Brenda Huettner and Char James-Tanny) Managing Virtual Teams: Getting the Most from Wikis, Blogs, and Other Collaborative Tools. In addition, she is the former editor of IEEE-PCS News, a contributor to Multilingual, TC World, and Intercom. Her blog is www.pangaeapapers.com.
